Relationships grow through adventure, effort, commitment and support. When a relationship ends, sensory associations leave emotional shadows on our memories. A constant attempt to forget causes an intrusive cycle of remembering. These photographs are an attempt to understand relationships that have been lost by actions and outcomes beyond my control.

All the photographs in this display are manipulated in some way. Using the darkroom to print the works in Consumed recreates the extended effort put into a relationship- both require time, patience and care. These photographs have been soaked in coffee after printing. Left to dry, the remaining coffee marks scar and erase the original image. The coffee stains cannot be controlled, similar to intrusive thoughts and unanswered questions that stick after an individual is gone.

Consumed’s process-driven practice informed the making of the four larger digital prints which were achieved through long exposure photography. These works focus on a central figure, highlighting detachment from others and paralyzing and vulnerable feelings of loss. The figure, and at other times the landscape, dissolves into a blur of movement, lost in the expansive space of the paper. These formal choices emphasize time passing, reflection, and a hazy consciousness that comes from lingering in the past. Together these transformations allude to outside influences and internal reflections of something or someone remembered.
